Rostering Junior Doctors to meet the working hours challenge
The European Working Time Directive (EWTD) plays a vital role in protecting the health and safety of workers from the effects of working excessively long hours, having inadequate rest and disruptive work patterns, and can contribute to improved work performance with a better balance between work and family life. From 2009 the directive imposes an average 48-hour maximum working week.
"The European Working Time Directive can be viewed as the greatest challenge the NHS has faced in recent years but also the greatest opportunity" John Reid, Secretary of State 2004.
"The New Deal and EWTD are two of the most pressing Workforce issues facing us in the NHS today". Paul Thorpe, Chairman of BMA Junior Doctor committee. Source: Guidance on Working Patterns for Junior Doctors.
